How to specify an industrial paper core or tube

A core that crushes, ovalises or sheds fibre stops a line. Six dimensions and one strength figure prevent most of those failures.

notes from our own lines

Paper cores and tubes look simple, but they carry the full weight of a reel of film, yarn, paper or metal coil through winding, transport and unwinding. Most failures come from a specification that was never written down.

Dimensions

Inner diameter must match the chuck or shaft it runs on, with a stated tolerance. Wall thickness drives strength and cost. Length and the tolerance on it matter for cores cut to reel width. If ends are notched, capped or chamfered, draw them.

Strength

Ask for the crush strength your application needs, based on the weight and winding tension of the material. Flat crush and radial crush tests are common ways to express it. A supplier can then choose the paper grade, number of plies and adhesive to reach it.

Straightness and roundness

A core that is out of round or bowed causes vibration at speed and uneven winding. State acceptable ovality and straightness for high-speed lines.

Environment and reuse

Say whether cores will see humidity, cold storage or repeated use. Moisture weakens paper, and a core meant for several trips needs a different construction from a single-use one.

What to send

  • Drawing or dimensions with tolerances
  • Material wound on the core and reel weight
  • Required crush strength, if known
  • Line speed and handling conditions
  • Annual volume and delivery pattern

Questions

What is flat crush strength?

Flat crush strength is the load a section of tube withstands when pressed between two flat plates before it deforms. It indicates how a core will behave under the weight of the wound material.
